Notes

The Ngalawa is a particular type of East African dugout whose design is said to have originated in Indonesia . Indonesian mariners came as far as Madagascar and some say they reached the East African coast over a thousand years ago. These boats have two outriggers and are thin and deep with a curious duck bill like prow. This piece is a section of one of these prows.
